Pride of Craftsmanship

Each and every baluster and newel post that leaves our shop is turned on our lathes by skilled craftsmen with an eye for detail. Whether you order one of our stock patterns, or submit your own sample, drawing or photo of a baluster or newel post that you want re-created, our promise is attention to detail and strict quality control.

Our stock patterns have been accumulated over years of doing custom work for clients who have brought us balusters and newel posts which they asked us to re-create for their restoration projects or to build new homes and buildings. Some were copied from actual samples from plantation homes, while others were re-created from nothing more than a photograph of a staircase that is now long gone. While others may offer such custom work, no one we know of can do so at a price that is competitive with stock items now available on the market. The key to our ability to do true custom work, with as much volume as our clients need, and at affordable prices, is our unique lathe.

The development of our lathe design began in 1985 in a garage, and the first model was made with scrap iron, spare parts and an old motor. From these humble beginnings we have perfected a lathe that produces as many copies of a baluster or newel post design as our customer requires. We are unaware of anyone else in the market who offers truly custom services, stair parts crafted from reclaimed antique lumber, and the personal service you will receive from the people at StairWell. Just a few of the many reasons that you should Step Up To StairWell!
