What is Reclaimed Antique Lumber?
StairWell accquires salvaged antique lumber from Antique Woods of Louisiana, which has been recycling this very valuable commodity since 1992. Most of the structures built in the deep south during the 1800's and early 1900's were constructed primarily of cypress and longleaf pine lumber harvested from the virgin swamps and forests of south Louisiana and other areas of the south. Rather than demolish such old structures, Antique Woods of Louisiana painstakingly dismantles old schools, churches, warehouses, gymnasiums, barns and houses, board by board, to preserve the highly prized building materials and provide us with the lumber from which we craft our finished products. The antique lumber we receive carries with it interesting artifacts such as square nails, joints formed with mortise and peg techniques, and even the occasional civil war musket ball. All metal objects must be meticulously removed from the lumber before it is planed and turned on our lathe, or it will damage our equipment (which is why other craftsmen refuse to work with reclaimed antique lumber). From such lumber we create balusters and newel posts that have the character and patina that can only be achieved by using genuine antique lumber.
Our pieces are turned with modern precision equipment, but the use of distressed lumber yields a product that immediately possesses the character of age. The look is unique, and stairs built using our stair parts grace fine homes and buildings throughout the country.
